Ferrimagnetic insulators for spintronics: Beyond garnets

Ferrimagnetic insulators have gained much attention as material platforms with efficient magnetization dynamics. To date, epitaxial iron garnet thin films are the most widely used materials in emerging field of “insulator spintronics.” However, further advances this require overcoming disadvantages garnets—e.g., their complex structure, high growth temperature, incompatibility other crystalline materials, and relatively weak perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. In Perspective, we make case that spinel ferrites hexagonal viable for insulator spintronics complementary advantages over oft-used garnets. Specifically, a simpler can crystallize at lower temperatures, more amenable to coherent integration various materials; possess enormous anisotropy bulk origin, contrast garnets where strength is restricted by interfacial strain. The expanded repertoire will enable new physical insights potential applications, beyond what currently possible
